Climate Change on Long Island: The Need For & Benefits of Urgent Action, with Cate Rogers

Show Description:

Climate Change on Long Island

As an island, Long Island is especially susceptible to some of the negative impacts from climate change–from sea level rise, to extreme storms. Join HealthyPlanet’s Bob DiBenedetto and The Climate Reality Project’s Cate Rogers, for a discussion of how climate change is currently, and will continue to impact Long Island and the rest of the world. They’ll also talk about the opportunities that addressing the climate crisis with a strong move toward clean energy, will create for Long Islanders now and in years to come.

This show discusses:

• What the Shelter Island Ferry and Montauk commercial docks owners already know about rising sea levels.

* The dangerous explosion in tick and mosquito-borne illness, and how they are related to our warming climate.

• How taking action on climate change can also save us money, and positively impact our local and global economy.

• How “feedback loops” will increasingly amplify the negative impacts of climate change.

• The connection between politically destabilizing global migrations and current climate instability.

• How Long Island is in a unique position to lead the country away from dangerous fossil fuels, and toward a truly clean energy economy.

• How the tactics of the tobacco industry are being used by those focused on misleading the public on climate change.

• How “sunny day flooding” is now a reality on Long Island.

• How parts of the world are becoming uninhabitable due to never-before-seen hot temperatures.

and more…
