Beautiful Pair of fish

Airing and Discussion of Ryuji Chua’s Documentary:

How Conscious Can A Fish Be?

With co-host Jennifer Greene

Show Description:

Join HealthyPlanet’s Bob DiBenedetto and co-host Jennifer Greene of Love and Liberation Radio for an audio airing of the important and thought-provoking documentary by Ryuji Chua, How Conscious Can A Fish Be?

When it comes to how we treat fish, there is a paradox with devastating consequences. On the one hand, fish are by far the animals that we kill in the largest number for food. Even a conservative estimate of how many we kill yearly is about 2 trillion–17 times the number of humans who have ever lived.

On the other hand, fish are the animals we protect the least from cruelty and suffering, both culturally and legally. Culturally, yanking them out of the water and suffocating them is considered a fun day out, and legally most laws that protect animals exclude them altogether.

What allows us to thoughtlessly strip our oceans of life with no regard for the feelings of these trillions of sea creatures is what we now know is an outdated and inaccurate perception of fish. Unlike dogs and cats, who we recognize are individuals who feel, think, and suffer, we often think of fish as primitive, stupid animals who can’t feel pain.

This documentary challenges us to reexamine our dated assumptions by outlining the latest evidence that suggests that fish do in fact feel, think and suffer, much like dogs, cats and other animals. Surprisingly, fish have much more complex social interactions than we had previously know and can have extraordinarily acute senses–including the ability to feel pain. Additionally, some fish have been shown to be exceptionally adept at solving problems that challenge other animals with much larger brains and to even use tools.

Despite what we now know, fish are the animals we protect the least from cruelty and suffering, both culturally and legally. Culturally, yanking them out of the water and suffocating them is considered a fun day out, and legally most laws that protect animals exclude them altogether. In practice, this means that out of all the animals we use for food, fish are the animals who most likely suffer the most, both in numbers and intensity.

This documentary will introduce you to the smartest fish in the world, delve deep into the twisted research that‘s been done on pain in fish, and answer the age-old question: “does a goldfish have a 3-second memory?”

Tune in to get informed, inspired, and empowered to become part of a much-needed global shift away from the mass destruction of sea life and our oceans.
