Addressing Environmental Racism & Oppression In Our Food Choices
With Lauren Ornelas, Founder/President
Food Empowerment Project
Creating a Just, Sustainable World Via Our Food Choices with Lauren Ornelas
Show Description:
An Interview with Lauren Ornelas of Food Empowerment Project
Racism and oppression have rightfully been the subject of worldwide protests over the last few weeks. We live in a country where some communities are subject to the impacts of racism in their daily lives, while others are virtually untouched by the widespread oppression that exists. This is a time for all of us to first become present to the reality of racism, and then to take whatever action we can take to address it, personally and collectively.
Join HealthyPlanet’s Bob DiBenedetto for an interview with Food Empowerment Project’s Founder and President, Lauren Ornelas. Lauren has worked for decades on connecting the various issues of oppression, especially as exists in our food system.
This show will help you to take that first step toward being part of the solution, by increasing your awareness of the problem. You’ll hear exactly how oppression exists in various sectors of our food system, as well as choices you can make to address it.
Listen to gain an understanding of the reality of:
– unfair working conditions for food workers–from produce to meat
– the unavailability of healthy foods in low-income areas
-the pollution that emanates from various sectors of our food production system that disproportionately impacts people of color
– the coronavirus’s exacerbation of the existing inequalities and challenges faced by agricultural workers
– the existence of child slavery in the majority of chocolate production, and how to source slavery-free brands
…and more
Current events are creating an opening for us to take a quantum leap in awareness and action on racism. Knowledge is power and now is the time to exercise that power–together!

About Lauren Ornelas:
Lauren Ornelas is the Founder and President of Food Empowerment Project (F.E.P.), a vegan food justice nonprofit that seeks to create a more just world by helping consumers recognize the power of their food choices.
F.E.P. works in solidarity with farm workers, promotes ethical veganism, advocates for chocolate not sourced from the worst forms of child labor, and focuses on access to healthy foods in communities of color and low-income communities. Watch her TEDx talk on The Power of Our Food Choices.
Lauren is the former executive director of Viva!USA, a national nonprofit vegan advocacy organization that Viva!UK asked her to start in 1999. While she was the director of Viva!USA, she investigated factory farms and ran consumer campaigns. In cooperation with activists across the country, she persuaded Trader Joe’s to stop selling all duck meat and achieved corporate changes within Whole Foods Market, Pier 1 Imports, and others, and she helped halt the construction of an industrial dairy operation in California.
Lauren was also the spark that got the founder of Whole Foods Market to become a vegan. In addition, she served as campaign director with the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition for six years. Watch lauren’s TEDx talk, The Power of Our Food Choices. (See link below.)
