The Peace Alliance:

From Cultivating Personal Peace… To Fostering International Peace

A Discussion with Members of the Peace Alliance Leadership Council

LISTEN HERE: Cultivating Peace, with The Peace Alliance

Show Description:

Most of us highly value peace in our lives, communities, country, and the world. And yet we live in a world where war is a constant, and in America, we face staggering levels of violence.

The social and economic costs of violence to individuals, families, and our communities are overwhelming:

•  Domestically, homicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10 to 24, seven times greater than other
    leading industrialized nations.
•  According to the World Health Organization, violence causes more than 1.6 million deaths worldwide every
year and is one of the leading causes of death for persons ages 15 to 44.
•  In the United States, we have some of the highest levels of crime and violence in the developed world and
have nearly 25 percent — over 2.2 million — of its prisoners.
•  The U.S. spends over $2 trillion annually on violence containment costs or around 15% of our GDP.
•  When adding up the concrete costs to the average American taxpayer, it is estimated that violence contain
ment spending costs $7,000 for every man, woman, and child each year. That is $6 billion daily, or $246
    million an hour.

On the positive side, we now have effective, root-cause solutions that are ready to be implemented. And
fortunately, there is a group that is focused on bringing those solutions to our communities and the world.

Join HealthyPlanet’s Bob DiBenedetto for an important discussion with three members of the leadership council of that group–The Peace Alliance–whose mission is to educate, advocate, and mobilize people into action to transform systems and public policy toward a culture of peace. They are Diane Tate, the Peace Alliance Leadership Council Managing Director; Nancy Merritt, the Leadership Council Department of Peacebuilding Lead; and Jelena Popovic, the Peace Alliance’s Leadership Council Practicing Peace in Schools Lead.

You’ll hear about the Peace Alliance’s comprehensive Blueprint For Peace, which has five Cornerstones; Practicing Peace in Schools, Community Peacebuilding, Cultivating Personal Peace, Humanizing Justice Systems, and Fostering International Peace.

The International Peace component includes a bill currently in congress that calls for a cabinet-level Department of Peacebuilding (DoP) and a Secretary of Peacebuilding to sit at our government’s table and to ensure that peacebuilding is an ongoing and prominent national priority.

Peace is not just a lofty goal, but a necessary practice for a harmonious and thriving society. Listen in to hear about the Peace Alliance’s exciting work and learn how to be part of the solution we all so strongly desire!

* About Our Peace Alliance Guests:

Diane Tate Leadership Council Managing Director: diane@peacealliance.org

Diane Tate has a bachelor’s degree in special education from Greensboro College and a master’s degree in social science from the Citadel. She has worked in the nonprofit arena her entire career, focusing on organizations that serve children in different ways: as a preschool director, an applied behavioral therapist for kids on the autism spectrum, and a therapeutic horseback-riding instructor for children and adults with disabilities. Ms.Tate serves on the Boards of The Palmetto Hope Network (www.palmettohopenetwork.org) and R.E.A.P.- Rural Education Advocacy Project (www.reapgh.org) and volunteers in her local community wherever she can be of service sharing her skills to amplify the voices of those living on the margins of our society.

Ms. Tate has unlocked her creative side as an artist, poet, and writer. She has published her memoir called Under the Radar: When Truth Hides in Plain Sight and is the proud mom to a grown daughter, who reminds her every day of what is important. She is a firm believer that you can’t change what you don’t acknowledge and that acknowledgment begins, for her, with a long look in the mirror.
