LISTEN HERE: Dawn Moncrief of A Well-Fed World: Plant-Based Soutions To Global Hunger and Climate Change
Show Description:
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, over 735 million people face hunger even though we have enough resources to feed everyone on our planet.
The existence of world hunger has become so normalized that despite the unfathomable reality, we treat it as if it’s unchangeable. We don’t often speak about it, and it is rarely decried by elected officials. Therefore, we assume that our own role in the solution is insignificant. We tacitly believe that the powers that be would be doing something about it if there were just a way.
Join HealthyPlanet’s Bob DiBenedetto for an eye-opening discussion with Dawn Moncrief, Founder and President of A Well-Fed World (AWFW). They discuss the facts about hunger on our planet and that while we often attribute the problem to scarcity and distribution issues, there is another factor that is not often discussed. That is, the sad reality that more than a third of the world’s precious crops are used as feed to create animal-sourced foods for those who can afford them versus feeding those in need.
The problem is exacerbated by the fact that livestock are highly inefficient converters of food, making the production of animal products “the ultimate form of food waste” on our planet. Cows, pigs, chickens, and all other animals raised for food consume much more than they produce (in calories, protein, and fiber). And much of that wasted food ends as manure wreaking havoc on our land, air, and water.
AWFW also points out that animal-sourced foods are a form of overconsumption and redistribution. They reduce the amount of available food by increasing the price of basic food staples, effectively redistributing crops from people to livestock (food vs. feed).
This dialogue illuminates the potential of plant-based diets as a crucial part of the solution to a problem that should not exist. By tuning in, you can deepen your understanding of this complex issue and learn how each of us can play a significant role in creating a fair, sustainable food system!

Dawn is the board chair of ProVeg International, board chair of Beyond Carnism, and co-chair of the Food and Climate Alliance.
