NY Climate Law Under Fire, Federal Assault on Our Health: Time For Bipartisan Citizen Unity?
Eric Wood NYPIRG’s Senior Environmental Program Coordinator
LISTEN HERE: NYS Climate Law Under Fire, with NYPIRG’s Eric Wood
Show Description: Is the division we feel over pollution and energy policy a difference in values—or the result of a well-funded misunderstanding?
In an era where the “United States of America” often feels like the Divided States of America, HealthyPlanet’s Bob DiBenedetto is joined by the Senior Environmental Program Coordinator for the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) Eric Wood, to explore an unlikely pathway to unity: holding our leaders accountable to protect our health, regardless of party. This episode pulls back the curtain on the industry-funded “doubt” that fuels our division and reveals a sobering reality: our environment is currently under a “pincer attack”—stalled by a Democratic administration in New York and actively dismantled by a Republican administration at the federal level.
Part 1: Holding New York State Accountable
Eric Wood explains the details and the urgent need for the open letter delivered to Governor Kathy Hochul and state leaders, signed by over 100 organizations statewide, calling out the state’s failure to follow its own landmark Climate Law.
Among the points they discuss:
- The Solar Gap: Why New York generates a “paltry” 5% of its electricity from solar while cloudy Germany reaches 15%—and how closing this gap would lower utility bills for Long Island families.
- The “All-of-the-Above” Myth: Why continuing to rely on fossil fuels and expensive nuclear power violates New York’s legal mandates and keeps electricity rates high.
- The Hidden Health Cost: The reality that nearly 2,000 New Yorkers suffer premature deaths every year due to air pollution from buildings.
- Accountability Check: Why a Democratic governor is approving gas pipelines and energy-heavy Bitcoin mining while climate benchmarks are missed.
- Wasting NY Taxpayer Dollars: How NY State continues to subsidize fossil fuel technologies by over 1 billion dollars per year, instead of spending on more affordable and sustainable clean energy technologies.
- Decisions That Don’t Serve The Public: How Kathy Hochul approved a very expensive gas pipeline, instead of funding the much more affordable options of community solar and energy efficiency measures.
Part 2: The National Battle & The Guardrails of Justice
In a closing wrap-up, Bob zooms out to the federal level to examine the systemic attempt to dismantle decades of critically important environmental progress.
He explores:
- The Assault on Science: The removal of the “Endangerment Finding,” the legal bedrock that requires the EPA to protect the air we breathe.
- The Personal War on Wind: An exposé on why offshore wind projects—like Long Island’s Sunrise Wind—are being stalled, and how a decades-old personal grudge over a view from a Scottish golf course is threatening our energy future and thousands of local jobs.
- The Good News: How the judicial system is still acting to protect public health over profits. With federal judges recently striking down the order to halt Sunrise Wind and four other major wind projects, we look at how the “guardrails” of our democracy are one of the last lines of defense against unbridled polluter profits, political and personal whims.
Tune in to discover why “following the law” is the most patriotic and practical path forward for our state, and for a thought-provoking exploration of how a full frontal assault on our health and environment may just have the power to unite us.
