The Central Long Island Vegan Chef Challenge:

Culinary Innovation for a Kinder World

The Central LI Vegan Chef Challenge: Culinary Innovation for a Kinder World

Discover how 28 local restaurants are changing the narrative around plant-based dining this June.

A Fun, Fresh Way to Align Our Plates with Our Values

Living a compassionate life doesn’t mean sacrificing the joy of a great meal out. While shifting our society’s daily eating habits away from animal products can sometimes feel like an uphill battle against lifelong social conditioning, a powerful new movement is hitting Long Island this month that turns activism into a delicious culinary celebration.

In this edition of The HealthyPlanet Radio Show, host Bob DiBenedetto is joined by a wonderful crew of local organizers and national advocates to launch the very first Central Long Island Vegan Chef Challenge. Running throughout the entire month of June, this exciting event partners with mainstream restaurants to showcase the creativity of local chefs—proving that vibrant, original vegan dishes can be enjoyed by everyone, not just those on a vegan diet.

Meet the Voices Behind the Challenge
To give you the inside scoop on how this event operates both locally and nationwide, Bob sits down with three key coordinators driving the plant-based movement forward:

  • Austin Simmons: A Vegan Chef Challenge Coordinator at the nonprofit organization Vegan Outreach, whose core mission is to end violence against animals through effective public education and programs like 10 Weeks to Vegan.

  • Ann Merrill: The Lead Organizer of the Central Long Island challenge, as well as a long-time, valued volunteer with HealthyPlanet’s Healthy School Lunch program.

  • Jennifer Greene: A key volunteer for the Long Island challenge and a familiar voice to WUSB listeners as the past host and producer of the Love and Liberation radio show.

Breaking the Stigma: Turning the Narrative into Delicious Reality

Why is there still a social stigma around the word “vegan,” even when pop stars, top athletes, and scientists agree it’s the future of planetary health? This episode dives deep into that exact question, addressing the public uproar surrounding statements like Billie Eilish’s assertion that you cannot truly claim to love animals while continuing to consume them.

The Vegan Chef Challenge bypasses defensive PR and aggressive corporate lobbying by simply letting the food speak for itself. By bringing entirely new, delicious, unpretentious plant-based options straight to standard restaurant menus, the challenge is successfully introducing meat-eaters and vegans alike to a kinder, more sustainable lifestyle—one bite at a time.”

How You Can Participate Starting Tonight!
With 28 participating restaurants across Central Long Island creating brand-new, exclusive vegan appetizers, entrees, and desserts, the public has a massive role to play. Not only do you get to taste incredible food, but you also get to vote for your favorites!

Listen in to learn how you, your friends, and your family can visit these local establishments, sample the new creations, and cast your votes online to crown the neighborhood’s top vegan chef.

“We tolerate immense violence just for a taste experience, even though we now know that eating animals is nutritionally unnecessary. This challenge shows us how simple—and delicious—it is to change that story.”
